Planning For The New Season

Not long now to the big kick off ...... many teams have been back training & playing friendlies for the last number of weeks ...... the best piece of advice that I can give coaches is to plan for the season now ..... break it up into managable chunks ....... 10 X 4 week blocks ........ have a primary theme for the season .... along with secondary themes to keep the players engaged & motivated ....... also get into the habit of writing out your session planners before training rather than just making it up as you go ...... players are not foolish & need to know the team / individual objectives ........ good luck & enjoy ........

Diary of The Legends Day - A Player Perspective

Sat the 25th of June will live long in the memory of everyone connected to Cabinteely F.C. It was the day that Irish world cup legends from the Italia 1990 & USA 1994 campaigns, rolled into town welding such big guns as Ronnie Whelan, Paul McGrath, John Aldridge & Jason McAteer to play a Cabo selection. What follows is an inside the ropes perspective from Cabinteely head coach Gavin Teehan on what it was like to be involved as a player on the day. Enjoy!
Midnight 24th June
Over my footballing career, I have been lucky enough to play for my country at many different levels including schoolboy, Universities, Semi-pro & have been involved in some big games along the way. Generally I feel nervous on the day of a game but tonight I feel different, excited is probably more accurate than nervous; I can’t believe that tomorrow I will share a pitch with some of my boyhood heroes. Sleep does not come easy as I imagine what might pan out in the match.
8am 25th June
Old habits die hard & I awake early on match day to get a good breakfast into me. I clean my boots & pack my bag, double checking that I have all of the vitals, boots, shin guards, spare socks, towel, deep heat, knee support, pain killers! (The latter items a recent addition to the match day kit). I rest for most of the morning & do the last minute sorting out of tickets for family & friends.
10am 25th June
I arrive at the ground to be greeted by a hive of activity. Club members have been on site since 6am to ensure that no stone is unturned in making this an extra special day. Barriers & tents have been erected, the goalposts & nets look in great shape, the pitch itself (hand washed) looks better than I could have imagined, all in all things are shaping up for a cracking day. Excitement levels increase!
12am 25th June
The specially commissioned Umbro kit for the day has arrived & been laid out in the dressing rooms. The players have all gathered & got into their smart blue t-shirts for the day. There is a genuine feeling of goodwill around the place as it starts to sink in that this day is like no other match day. The banter amongst the players is fierce as they start to read their biogs in the programme & the slagging is great craic. Many photographs are taken with the European cup & the Jerseys with the players names on the back go down a treat. We actually feel like pros! Albeit, over the hill pros, but we can dream cant we!
12.30pm 25th June
A short coach ride to the Radisson Stillorgan for lunch & a meet & greet session with our soon to be opponents. We are like kids as we meet our heroes for the first time, shaking hands & swapping our favourite stories about our days following these guys on television & the terraces. The Irish legends all seem relaxed & in good form as they sign autographs & stand in for endless photos.
We ourselves gather on the steps of the hotel for our own team photo & the banter is cranked up a notch. Nerves are clearly evident amongst some of the group! Time to head for the stadium!
2pm 25th June
A police escort guides us through the Dublin traffic & we get back to Cabinteely in a flash, to be greeted by the fans at the clubhouse entrance. The excitement & nerves start to build as we try to get into match mode. Old superstitions are on show in the dressing rooms as the players begin their various rituals in preperation for the kick off. The physios are worked to the bone rubbing oil into ageing limbs in an effort to kick start them into action! The banter has subsided, a little & players start to gather their own thoughts about what lies ahead.
3pm 25th June
Finally, after months of preperation the big game is here. We walk onto the pitch & having warmed up, line up for the national anthem. The tune that belts out of the speakers is certainly not the anthem as we know it & the player’s laughter breaks the tension of the occasion. The Irish players file past us & we shake hands with some of the greats of our games history, Whelan, McGrath, Aldridge, McAteer to name but a few. At last, we kick off. It has always amazed me that the minute the game kicks off my nerves disappear. For others it takes a few moments to settle as they get used to their illustrious opponents.
4.30pm June 25th
The game ends with the legends winning an entertaining affair 6-2. I am pleased that we scored & gave them a decent game. The large number of fans certainly seemed to enjoy it & appreciate everyone’s efforts. One of our special needs players steals the show with a cameo appearance & a brace of goals. You could not have scripted a better finish to the game.
5pm June 25th
One of the final thrills of the day, as all players were asked to sign autographs for the hoards of kids who had stayed around after the game to meet the players. This for many of the Cabo stars was a world away from the day job & a brilliant experience.  Following this both sets of players mingled in the clubhouse hall & shared a drink & a laugh recounting the memories from the game.
8pm June 25th
The Radisson hotel was the venue for the gala dinner to cap a memorable day. Everyone was in truly great form & despite the aching limbs a brilliant night was had by all. War stories were swapped & exaggerated as the evening wore on. Great contacts were made & friendships forged that will see Cabinteely F.C. grow into an even more potent force as a club than it already is. Sometime in the early hours of the morning, I finally hit the pillow to dream about the star studded day & the many wonderful memories contained therein.

What "Cabo" Is All About

Cabo Legend & Cougars star David Johnston wheels away in delight following his spectacular second goal .... Paul Byrne of Celtic fame throws his hands in the air to acclaim the great volley ......
The Irish legends including McGrath, Aldridge & McAteer rolled into town on Sat & between them & a spirited Cabo selection put on a feast of football for the large crowd in Kilbogget park ........the game finished 6-2 to the legends with some of the goals scored fitting for any world stage ....... the crowd got to see their heroes of yester year up close & personal .... the players themselves more than accomodating as they signed autographs & posed for pictures all day ..... young boys & girls from the playing ranks in Cabo were the mascots on the day ..... our small sided game stars put on a great game for entertainment at half time ...... our seniors helped out as stewards on the day ..... our members manned the burger shack & sweet shops ...... hundreds of people lent a hand to make this day special ...... this in itself is not a remarkable thing ...... Cabinteely have always put on a good show ..... you only have to look at our annual Mini World Cup as evidence of this ..... the real noteworthy element of the day will forever be remembered when people think back on the man of the match performance of ..... David Johnston ...... himself a legend in Cabo's special needs "Cougar" section ..... who outrageously stole the show from the many world cup & european championship stars appearing on the day ...... scoring two wonder goals & stealing the hearts of everyone in the crowd with his exuberent celebrations ...... this to me summed up everything good about Cabo .... it's ethos of Football For All ..... it's family like community spirit ...... it's wonderful people & of course .... it's amazing players ........... McAteer himself ran onto the pitch to share in David's joy following his second goal high fiving the young star to a standing ovation from the crowd ...... how many other clubs can claim to have such an inclusive & open approach to football development as Cabo ...... I have always been proud to be part of this great club ..... saturdays match & the spirit in which it was played has cemented my belief that Cabo is a great club ..... speaking to the legends about player development .... some of whom run academies in premier league clubs .... I am more than pleased to say they were united in their admiration for our coaching ethos & structures...... compounding for me my belief that the new approach that we are taking in trying to improve & develope the football side of the Club  ..... by raising knowledge & awareness through quality coaching is by far the right way to do things ...... "Football For All" will long live as the Cabinteely moto & really is what "Cabo" is all about .........
The real Cabo Legends ....... some of the many brilliant members of the club ...... who make days like the Legends day as special as they are with their tireless work & team spirit ........ Cabo Coaching salutes you ......

A Thin Line

Don't be fooled regarding players competitiveness ..... no matter what age they are they want to win ..... it's a natural instinct ....... the problem often lies with the coaches & parents who make winning the only factor in success & often players fear of failure inhibits their performance indeed often leading to behaviour that is aggressive in the extreme .......... bordering on malicious ..... not only this ........ this fear of losing leads to ultra negative football where teams set up not to lose as their primary strategy ...... The recent Kennedy Cup .... Ireland's premier event for U13's in this country highlighted this perfectly ........ The DDSL went down to this tournament having won the previous 7 in a row ....... a fact not lost on every other representative side down in Limerick ..... I have never witnessed such hate & spite towards a group of players as was on show at this event ...... every game that they played was watched by large crowds .... the majority of whom simply wanted them beaten ..... no matter how this happened ........ with the exception of one side who tried to play football against them ..... the majority of teams set up to choke the game & never came out to play... instead resorting to pure physical tactics ( if you can call them that ) ..... plus an over reliance on the long ball .... this is not football that will ever improve our overall standards within the country .... much to the delight of 99% of people at the tournament the best side on show for the week by far .... the DDSL .... were beaten fairly in the final by neighbours the NDSL 1-0 ...... this in itself is not remarkable .... in any two horse race you have a chance & the NDSL to their credit took theirs ......... what happened in the moments just after the final whistle however will long live in the memory ...... for all of the wrong reasons ...... players from other leagues ... parents & coaches alike ran onto the pitch to acclaim the defeat of the DDSL ...... players or kids as we should really call them ...... were spat at by sections of the crowd .... jostled & pushed to the ground ...... indeed one young player took a punch to the back of the head from a so called football fan ....... this is an absolute disgrace & highlights the cancer spreading in our game ......... amongst other things ....  we would prefer to see the brawn defeat the brain ....... physicality over technique ....... instead of applauding the likes of the DDSL for trying to play good football ..... in fairness they were one of only a few sides to try different formations ( 1-4-3-3 & 1-4-4-2 ) ..... they also played out from the back when it was on ..... refreshing considering that the majority of other teams simply launched the ball forward from the keeper .... not only this ......... the reaction at the final whistle from the crowd mirrored much of what was seen on the sidelines during the week long event ....... cursing & abusing referees is common in our game & must be eradicated for good ...... uneducated morons on the side lines must be confronted & removed for the welfare of the officials ... players ..... & decent spectators alike ....... none of this will change until the powers that be ..... firstly acknowledge the problems & secondly in conjunction with their league partners take steps to change this culture ....... it won't be easy ...... but it is vital to the successful & improved state of our beloved game .....

Positive Coaching

People often wonder if their is a secret to getting the best out of players ..... in my experience the most powerful tool in a coaches locker is the ability to instill confidence  in players using nothing more than the Power of Positive Coaching ........ tell someone that they are bad at something enough .... they will soon begin to believe it ...... conversely ...... tell a player how good you think that they are or have the potential to be & the results can be quite extraordinary ........ be honest in your assessments of a situation though ..... you don't want players knowing that you never say anything in a constructive criticism kind of way .... they are no fools & can see through false praise ..... but once players give 100% you can ask no more .... so adapt fairness & consistency in your communication to them & you will never go far wrong ...........
